We are now accepting Letters of Intent (LOI) for our Basic Research Fellowships and Discovery Grants until December 4, 2019.

Basic Research Fellowships are two-year, $100,000 mentored grants supporting postdoctoral fellows who are conducting laboratory or field-based research projects that focus on brain tumors.

Fellows must have a lead mentor who currently conducts brain tumor research at the same academic institution. The mentor will help with scientific management and other research guidance to foster the applicant’s career advancement.

Basic Research Fellowship projects are pre-screened using a letter of intent (LOI), typically due in early December of every calendar year. Invitations and instructions to submit a complete proposal are extended by email in February, with an application due in March.

Discovery Grants are one-year, $50,000 grants for high risk, high impact research with the potential to change current diagnostic or treatment models.

American Brain Tumor Association Jack and Fay Netchin Medical School Summer Fellowships are $3,000 grants awarded to medical students who wish to spend a summer conducting brain tumor research with esteemed scientist mentors. The program’s intent is to inspire talented medical students to pursue a career in neuro-oncology research.

The ABTA grant application portal accepts applications beginning in November each year, with an application due date of early January.

Research Collaboration Grants are two-year, $200,000 grants for multi-investigator and multi-institutional brain tumor collaborative research projects. They are intended to promote team science, streamlining and accelerating research progress.

Research projects must be conducted by a team of at least two co-principal investigators (Co-PI’s) from different institutions. The research project should be multidisciplinary, incorporating multiple components such as basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiological research.

Applications for the ABTA Research Collaboration Grants are accepted every other year. Applications are pre-screened using a Letter of Intent, typically due in December of even-numbered years. Invitations and instructions to submit a Full Application are extended by email in February of odd-numbered years, with an application due date in March. Letters of Intent will not be accepted in 2019 for the 2020 funding cycle.

Mindee J. Plugues, of Los Angeles, CA, is vice president, marketing for the Applebee’s brand and brings skills including brand strategy, executive leadership, and marketing to the board. Plugues has been an ABTA donor since April 2001, following her father’s passing from GBM. She is also a former member of the ABTA endurance program, Team Breakthrough.

Bob Kruchten

Bob Kruchten, of Mount Prospect, IL, is a sales manager at Extreme Reach, a leading advertising technology company. He has strong skills in communications and fundraising, and has been advocating for the ABTA for 19 years in tribute to his best friend, Paul Fabbri, who lost his 10-year battle with GBM in 1998. Kruchten accepted the ABTA’s Joel A. Gingras Jr. Award in 2015 on behalf of the Paul Fabbri Memorial Fund.
